A few years ago one of my good girlfriends put me on to the benefits of drinking lemon water. Ever since learning this information I try to drink a beer mug full of the tonic every morning. I’ll write a post about the experience another time, but I even noticed “mucus” breaking up in my body when I did this consistently. Before I even get to the main benefits of what drinking this mixture will do for I want to tell you a secret. Simply adding lemons to your water is a quick and affordable way to create alkaline water. Yes, alkaline water. And if you didn’t know you could make alkaline water without using a machine now you know. Thank me later like Drake. If you’re NOT excited then what the hell is wrong with YOU? Because that is 3 benefits and I haven’t got into the meat & potatoes of this post. And now you can do something useful with all those lemons they give out at restaurants.
IT TASTE BETTER THAN REGULAR WATER
If you hate drinking water this is a great hack to get over that hump. I personally am not a huge fan of drinking water, but for good health it must be done. There simply is no way around it. The human body is mostly made up of water and that water must be replenished. I can easily drink 2 or 3 beer mugs full of this concoction without even thinking twice about it. If you want to get really fancy throw in some cucumbers too.
NATURAL WAY TO GET RID OF MUCUS
It helps keep mucus and phlegm from forming in your body. There is nothing more annoying than having phlegm in the back of your throat. Since I still eat diary mucus in a constant presence in my body. What I’ve noticed though that if I consistently drink lemon water without eating especially, the mucus disperses. When it first happened I was in total shock, because I wasn’t aware that this could even happen. Take it from me though this isn’t some internet rumor, it really works.
MAKES YOUR BODY ALKALINE
Many people believe that lemons are acidic ( and they are) . As long as the lemons are outside of your body then they are acidic. After your body processes the acidic lemons they turn alkaline, and your body will love you for this. It is thought that the more acidic your body is the more prone to disease you become. You can monitor how acidic or alkaline your body is with Ph Test Strips and go from there.
ALMOST AS GOOD AS GATORADE
Lemons contain 3 key electrolytes: 124mg of potassium, 6.0mg magnesium and 7.0mg calcium. By tossing them in your water, you’ve just created your very own homemade electrolyte water. Electrolytes are essential for muscle function, keeping your body hydrated and regulating the acidity of your blood. When you sweat your body loses its store of electrolytes and water by itself doesn’t contain them. So this means lemon water would be a great post work out drink.
IT IS A EASY WAY TO DETOX
Detoxifying focuses on cleansing out the organs that eliminate toxins and waste for the body. There are a lot of methods to detox, but a lemon water detox is a no brainer. It is just to pass up. Lemons have a high concentration of citric acid and this is commonly found in over the counter detox systems.
BOOSTS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Lemons are jam packed with nutrients. They contain traceable amounts of vitamin C, potassium, bioflavonoids, magnesium and citric acid. All of these nutrients are vital for your body to function properly, and pure Vitamin C is often used to fight off colds.
According to the lovely people who write for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism drinking water boosts your metabolism. The study suggests that drinking 16oz of water increased metabolic rate by 30%.
If you drink the recommended daily amount of water you can’t help but notice you are NOT hungry. It is almost impossible. You will still need to eat, but the desire to do so will be diminished greatly. One thing water does well is sit on your stomach. Inevitably your brain gets the signal that it is not hungry. It becomes impossible to snack or binge eat when you’re full on water. I personally can eat one meal a day as long as I’ve had at least 16oz of water.
A FEW TIPS ON LEMON WATER PREPARATION
- Lemon slices work best
- Add some cucumber and mint to the mix
- Use a straw since on the way down lemon water is still acidic and acid is bad for teeth enamel.
- Always use fresh lemons and not the bottled stuff
- Drink it in the morning
- Drink warm or room temperature water, your body will expend less energy
